Pune Metro Development Accelerates as PM Modi Launches Projects Worth 21,800 Crore

Date:

Prime Minister Narendra Modi will inaugurate and lay the foundation stone for Pune Metro projects worth approximately ₹21,800 crore via video conferencing today (November 3) at 12:30 PM. During the event, he will also address the gathering. The Prime Minister will inaugurate Pune Metro Line-3 (Pink Line), built at a cost of over ₹8,300 crore. Additionally, he will lay the foundation stone for the second phase of the Pune Metro, which is being developed at an estimated cost of around ₹13,500 crore.

Connectivity between Hinjewadi IT Hub and Shivajinagar via the Pink Line

The Prime Minister will inaugurate Pune Metro Line-3, constructed at a cost of over ₹8,300 crore. Known as the ‘Pink Line,’ this project will strengthen Pune’s urban transport infrastructure through modern transit facilities and technological innovation. Spanning approximately 23 kilometres, this corridor will connect Hinjewadi to the District Court Metro Station, providing metro connectivity between the Hinjewadi IT Hub and Shivajinagar.

Easier access to Hinjewadi—one of Pune’s major employment hubs—will facilitate the daily commute for thousands of IT professionals and other passengers. The corridor will be integrated with the existing metro network, ensuring seamless connectivity across various parts of the city. This will help reduce reliance on private vehicles, alleviate traffic congestion, lower vehicular emissions, and improve access to key commercial and residential areas.

Pink Line to be operated by women train operators

A key feature of Pune Metro Line-3 is its strong emphasis on women’s empowerment and inclusive public transport. The entire line will be operated by women train operators—a significant initiative of its kind. The project also prioritises environmental conservation and clean energy; approximately 30% of the metro’s total electricity requirements are envisioned to be met through solar energy, promoting the use of clean energy sources. Second Phase of Metro to be Developed at a Cost of ₹13,500 Crore

Prime Minister Narendra Modi will lay the foundation stone for the second phase of the Pune Metro. This phase is set to be developed at an estimated cost of approximately ₹13,500 crore. It includes Metro Lines 2A, 2B, 4, and 4A. Their construction will expand Pune’s metro network and strengthen connectivity between key residential, commercial, and IT hubs.

Expansion from Vanaz to Chandani Chowk and Ramwadi to Vitthalwadi

Under the second phase, Lines 2A and 2B will have a combined length of approximately 12.75 kilometres. Line 2A will connect Vanaz to Chandani Chowk, while Line 2B will link Ramwadi to Vitthalwadi, extending the existing east-west metro network. Additionally, Line 4—spanning approximately 25.52 kilometres—will connect Kharadi to Khadakwasla, and the 6.12-kilometre-long Line 4A will connect Nal Stop to Manik Baug.

Key Areas Including Kharadi, Magarpatta, and Hadapsar to be Connected

The new metro corridors will connect several significant areas of the city, including Kharadi, Magarpatta, Hadapsar, Swargate, Manik Baug, Nanded City, Pune Cantonment, and Warje. The eastern extension from Ramwadi to Vitthalwadi will facilitate easier access to the rapidly developing residential, commercial, and IT hubs in Kharadi and Wagholi.

These new corridors will integrate with the existing Pune Metro network and intercity bus services through interchange facilities at Swargate, Nal Stop, and Kharadi Bypass, providing commuters with a superior, integrated transport system to reach various parts of the city.

Strengthening the Urban Transport System

These projects will bolster Pune’s public transport infrastructure, improve connectivity across different parts of the city, and provide commuters with an efficient, modern, and integrated urban transport network.
