Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Monday congratulated Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva on his re-election as President of Brazil, expressing confidence in further strengthening the strategic partnership between India and Brazil.
In a message posted on X, Modi described Lula’s victory as remarkable and said he looked forward to working closely with him to expand cooperation across several sectors.
PM Modi highlighted the importance of India-Brazil relations and reaffirmed India’s commitment to closer cooperation with the South American nation.
He said both countries would continue working together across diverse sectors, advance the shared priorities of the Global South and promote a more inclusive, equitable and sustainable world.
The two countries maintain a multifaceted strategic partnership, with cooperation spanning areas of mutual interest.
According to Brazil’s electoral authorities, Lula secured victory in the presidential runoff, defeating Senator Flavio Bolsonaro, the son of former President Jair Bolsonaro.
The result followed a closely watched election campaign. Flavio Bolsonaro, who had led the first round, reportedly lost the runoff by more than four million votes.
He disputed the outcome and indicated that he would seek annulment of the result, citing a Supreme Court ruling that extended voting hours in some circumstances. However, analysts cited in the report considered a reversal of the result unlikely.
Lula’s victory marks another political comeback for the veteran leader, who previously served as Brazil’s president from 2003 to 2010 and returned to office in 2023.
Despite the electoral victory, Lula faces significant challenges during his next term. Brazil’s political landscape includes a strong conservative opposition in Congress, which could complicate efforts to pass legislation and implement government policies.
Economic concerns include public debt, high interest rates, household borrowing and relatively modest growth projections.
The incoming administration will need to balance social welfare commitments with fiscal pressures and demands for economic reforms.
